Phoenix: The Fastest Growing City

Earlier this month, List Wire published data it received from the U.S. Census Bureau regarding the 15 fastest growing cities in the U.S. Phoenix topped the list as the #1 fastest growing city, and that only includes data for the city of Phoenix specifically, not the entire metro area.

Metro Growth

The City of Phoenix added almost 67,000 residents in 2021, and almost 73,000 in 2022. The population of Phoenix is now 1,660,272, according to the census.

The population of the entire metro area is just shy of 5,000,000 which might seem laughable to somebody who remembers as a child the big deal that was made when the metro area reached 1,000,000 residents. We had two freeways, the I-17 and the I-10, which didn’t even connect directly into Phoenix from the West. If you wanted to take the I-10 to Los Angeles, you had to take McDowell Road to Buckeye to catch the I-10.

Why Phoenix?

In the past decade, it’s well documented there has been a migration to sunnier/warmer climates. If that’s your calling, Phoenix is DEFINITELY the place for you! In addition to our over 300 days per year of sunshine (which quite frankly today seems excessive), Phoenix also boasts a diverse economy, thanks in part to the real estate collapse of 2008. Since that time, many employment opportunities in the tech, finance, healthcare, and manufacturing sectors have relocated to the metro area.

What we believe was the actual catalyst for the rapid population growth in the metro area happened in 1981 when America West Airlines (which was acquired by U.S. Airways, and subsequently acquired by American Airlines) opened their headquarters in Tempe, and named Phoenix Sky Harbor Airport as their hub. Suddenly, you could fly direct/non-stop from almost every major city in the U.S. to Phoenix. People from everywhere were coming to enjoy luxury resorts, an abundance of golf courses, excellent dining experiences, and nightlife. Some of them never went back home, and many had family and friends come to visit, who also relocated.
